Parking Fines Set to Double!!

Bookmark and Share

Some councils outside London have lobbied the government to allow them to increase fines by up to 100%. Their move is backed by the British Parking Association who say that the current level of fines is not a real deterrent in some areas. They say that the level of the fine is just a little more than the cost of parking for a whole day. However in our opinion it is incorrect to use this analogy as in most areas you are restricted to parking for a couple of hours and so a fine based on a little more than a day's parking charges is actually quite a deterrent. Also in many areas there are secondary enforcement measures such as clamping and towing away - which is another deterrent!

We also say when will this war on the motorist end? The government says they will end it but now they are considering these requests from several councils.

These councils don't manufacture anything. They simply send out demands for payment. If they can't turn a profit on a fine of £70 then motorists should not be penalised for their inefficiency. We will write to Norman Baker the new transport secretary but, based on other responses from him, we don't hold out much hope.
