Transport for London to introduce parking charges on London's red routes
Following the comprehensive spending review Boris Johnson's transport for london is set to introduce parking charges on bays on it's red route network. We say that this will harm businesses and alienate the motorists who may well consider this just another tax on them during very difficult times.
The levying of parking charges by local authorities in order to raise revenue may well be illegal. The 1984 road traffic act is clear in that parking charges and enforcement cannot be used to raise revenue and a high court case Cran vs Camden Council many years ago confirmed that parking charges cannot be levied with the intention of raising revenue. It may well be that a motoring group or retailers group decide to mount a legal challenge if the mayor decides to pursue this.
We hope that the mayor will decide to abolish these plans.
